Partner William (Bill) Coy, MA/MFT, is an experienced consultant and teacher with particular skills in helping growing organizations to manage their human resources, develop their leadership talent, and integrate their changing cultures. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco where he teaches the core graduate level course on Human Resource Management in Nonprofits.
Nonprofit restructuring and organizational development have been a primary focus of Bill’s work. He has acted as a coach and consultant to over 100nonprofit executive directors, assisted in the creation of boards, and worked with nonprofits to define and redefine their mission, vision, and purpose. He has over 25 years consulting experience in developing effective operational systems, processes, and board/staff roles in order to support nonprofits in making their missions a viable reality. He has developed a specialized expertise in helping management teams become more cohesive and effective.
Bill has developed and led leadership learning communities for both emerging and senior leaders from Fargo North Dakota to Honolulu Hawai’i. He was recognized as “Volunteer of the Year” in 2005 by the Northern California Human Resource Council for his work in service to promoting and improving the profession of human resource management.
Prior to joining La Piana Consulting, Bill was Director of Human Resources for the Catholic Diocese of Oakland and for Yosemite National Institutes, an environmental education organization. He also directed training and development for George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), a film special effects company, and was responsible for organizational and management development at both ILM and Skywalker Sound. Bill is the only consultant known to have facilitated meetings at both the Vatican and Skywalker Ranch!
Originally trained as a cultural anthropologist, Bill holds graduate degrees in systematic theology and clinical counseling. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist and is also certified in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing and has worked in organizational trauma recovery.
