David La Piana
David partners with major foundations and national nonprofits to develop practical solutions to complex challenges. The author of six books on nonprofit strategy, competitiveness, and mergers, he is a popular speaker and thought leader who regularly contributes to the national dialogue on organizational effectiveness and the future of the social sector. David's consulting practice is rooted in helping organizations break out of old ways of thinking to drive change. He has led consulting engagements with the ACLU, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, and The Atlantic Philanthropies to accelerate strategic action and increase social impact.
Prior to founding La Piana Consulting, David was a VISTA volunteer, a community organizer, and a manager with food security and refugee organizations. As a CEO he led a children’s mental health nonprofit through an extended period of unprecedented growth. David has an MPA from the University of San Francisco and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in Comparative Literature from the University of California at Berkeley. He has also studied at the University of Madrid.
