A word that sums me up is
Versatile
The most interesting thing happening in the social sector today is:
The fast rate of change. We are in a time period of constant change and we must be able to adapt to those changes. It is overwhelming at times, but hopefully it will put our sector in a better place to support our communities.

Luis partners with nonprofits, public systems, and foundations to help them think creatively about how to best implement their missions. He leads projects in strategy development, business planning, mergers and other forms of collaboration, and leadership development. He also has expertise in helping clients with brand development. Luis is most inspired by the opportunity to work with emerging leaders and organizations addressing child/youth issues and diversity and equal access.

Luis’ affinity for the nonprofit sector began early in his career in positions with organizations like Youth Radio. As a consultant, he has valued the opportunity to work with young and emerging leaders, and with organizations serving the Latino community. He is particularly adept at meeting leaders where they are at and helping them move their groups to the next level of organizational development. Past clients include Leadership Counsel, Child Crisis Arizona, Workers Defense Project, Rebuilding Together Peninsula, and Cesar Chavez Foundation.

“I like the work we do with emerging leaders and organizations, especially as they begin to grow, since small changes can make a significant impact.”

Luis has a background in both marketing and nonprofit management, giving him a unique perspective and set of skills to share with clients. Prior to joining La Piana in 2006, Luis was a Strategic Director at national research and strategy firm Cheskin. He also served as Executive Director of Youth Radio and as Senior Policy Associate with Safe Passages. Luis has a BA in Public Relations from San Jose State University and is fluent in Spanish.

Luis is available as a speaker on nonprofit partnerships and strategic restructuring, as well as on the intersection between nonprofit strategy and branding.

“I feel a project has been successful when there’s a breakthrough that changes how the organization approaches its work. It could be development of a new strategy, or just reaffirming a current one, but it brings clarity about where they are going.”
