SEIU and AFSCME Announce Plan to Explore Closer Collaboration

On May 5, the New York Times featured a story about the efforts of two major labor unions to work more closely toward common goals. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) have negotiated a plan to explore deeper partnerships, up to and including a possible merger.

A resolution to this effect has been adopted by the SEIU and is expected to be considered by AFSCME’s board in June; ratification by membership would be sought at annual conventions later in the year. The two unions have already begun to join forces in specific advocacy campaigns and policy efforts; their continuing conversations will explore opportunities to build on these.
