Now Our Work is More Important Than Ever

On this morning I am writing to offer my solidarity with you and with all our clients and colleagues in the field. We will not give up, we will just work harder.

Dear Colleagues,

We all woke up this morning (or went to bed late last night) to an unthinkable reality. For the next four years we will experience social and economic upheavals at home and abroad, and much of the social progress of the past half century is at risk to both policy and court action. It is going to be a tough run for the country and the people and causes we care most about. The racism, scapegoating of immigrants, homophobia, transphobia, and marginalization of women we all know exist in our country alongside our drive for social justice, have momentarily won the day. But they are wrong, and our demographics are against them. Remember Dr. King’s statement: “The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” As a nation I am confident we will still get there, it is just going to take longer, require more work from us all, and involve a lot more pain for the nation than we had hoped.

A couple hours ago I received a message from a client which said, in part, “now our work is more important than ever.” Many of our clients are at this hour planning meetings to debrief, analyze, and recalibrate. On this morning I am writing to offer my solidarity with you and with all our clients and colleagues in the field. We will not give up, we will just work harder.
